Tour de France: Alaphilippe wins on day of protest and pain

Philippe Gilbert has revealed the extent of his injuries following his Tour de France crash

The incident occurred on stage 16 of the 135-mile route from Carcassonne to Bagneres-de-Luchon, roughly 18 miles into the race.

French police forces dispersed the demonstration by throwing tear gas before riders arrived, according to Tour de France broadcaster France Televisions.

Team Sky leader Froome, a four-time champion, finished the stage in eighth place at 1min 35sec behind Colombian victor Nairo Quintana and 48secs behind teammate and overall leader Geraint Thomas.

A gendarme sprays tear gas at protesters as other gendarmes remove haystacks from the route, during a farmers' protest blocking the stage's route.

Froome is looking to win his fourth consecutive Tour de France.

The Tour de France Twitter account tweeted a warning to protesters after the delay, saying that if you don't respect the riders you risk a fine and three years of imprisonment.

Protesting farmers had blocked the road with hay bales, leading police to spray them with CS gas.

Riders wait with Britain's Geraint Thomas, wearing the overall leader's yellow jersey, on the road after a farmer's protest interrupted the 16th stage.

Immediately after the F1-style start riders head straight into the mountains as they make their ascent up the Col de Peyresourde (1,569 metres).

"I was lucky that it did not affect me too much, I had a bit of tingling in the back of the throat but I used some water to wash it out", said Thomas on the finish line in the spa town of Bagneres-de-Luchon, after keeping his overall lead intact.

"We are not going to lock the riders in a stadium or a tennis court", Tour director Christian Prudhomme said.

The small group of farmers from the Ariege department were protesting the reduction of European Union funding, French media reported.

Spain's Gorka Izagirre took second place and Yates finished third, 15 seconds behind. "It's bike racing", the said Alaphilippe.

He was gaining time in the descent when Yates went down.
