Representatives Meadows, Pelosi Respond to Release of Carter Page FISA Documents

Justice Dept. releases FISA documents on Carter Page

On Sunday, Page said that it was "ridiculous" and a "complete joke" to believe he had been an agent of the Russian government.

The Trump administration on Saturday released a set of redacted documents once deemed top secret, the October 2016 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court application and renewals to wiretap Page.

President Trump has jumped aboard another conspiracy theory about the Russian Federation investigation, and the central figure is Carter Page.

Trump's laser focus on Steele ignores other facts as well, including that Page had previously lived in Russia and was on the FBI's radar as early as 2013, when it suspected Russian intelligence agents were trying to recruit Americans.

In his Opening Monologue, Sean Hannity said the fact the unverified Russian Federation dossier produced by a former MI6 agent made up a large part of the FISA application to surveil former Trump adviser Carter Page is the "biggest single scandal in American history".

Trump on Sunday used the document release to criticize the Justice Department's handling of the Russian Federation investigation, which he once again described in a tweet as a "witch hunt" against his administration.

But lawmakers from both parties say the documents don't show wrongdoing.

Trump said the Steele dossier "was responsible for starting" Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into links between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

"The Papadopoulos information triggered the opening of an FBI counterintelligence investigation in late July 2016 by FBI agent Pete Strzok", the House Intelligence Committee's GOP members wrote in a February 2 memo.

Trump tweets: "A Rocket has not been launched by North Korea in 9 months".

Page has categorically denied the accusations, appearing on CNN's State of the Union to proclaim his innocence and restate that he has not been charged with any crime, despite being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for more than two years.

Steele also alleged that Page worked with Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort to collude with the Russian government. Information included in the request had been largely reported through two declassified memos released separately by Republicans and Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee, but Saturday's disclosure puts the FBI's own argument in black and white for the first time.

Mr Trump said it appeared that his campaign was illegally spied on.

While Nunes' committee disputed the "tradecraft" behind the United States intelligence community's January 2017 assessment that found Russian President Vladimir Putin was trying to help Donald Trump win, the Senate Intelligence Committee issued a report earlier this month that agreed with the intelligence community's conclusions and took no issue with its tradecraft. "They should drop the discredited Mueller Witch Hunt now!"

Republican Senator Marco Rubio, the author of a bill that would impose severe sanctions on Russia if it was determined to have interfered in a United States election, said Trump should approach meetings with Putin without illusions about the Russian leader's endgame.

"I don't think it's part of any broader plot", he said.

Page has repeatedly denied he made any deals with Russian Federation on behalf of the Trump campaign. And they largely - I have to say, assessing it - dovetail with the Democrats' arguments that the court was given information that the Steele dossier was opposition research and so it knew to discount that.
