Geraint Thomas keeps yellow jersey as Tour de France heads to Pyrenees

Tour de France 2018 - Peter Sagan wins Stage 13 as Geraint Thomas keeps lead

"Gianni is desperately disappointed in his behaviour and knows that he has let himself, the team and the race down".

"It's an wonderful position for us", Froome said.

"I would like to offer my honest apologies to both Elie Gesbert and Team Fortuneo Samsic for this unacceptable incident".

Moscon was suspended by Sky for six weeks for a racist slur against a French rider past year.

The team was due to issue a statement following reports that Moscon had struck another rider early on yesterday's stage, where the official results listed Moscon as "hors course" - off the race.

The three riders were the last of a breakaway group of 29 cyclists.

Marc Madiot, the manager of the Groupama team and the president of the MPCC (Movement for Clean Cycling), which Team Sky have refuse to join, expressed dismay at the manner in which an anti-doping case concerning Froome was dropped by the International Cycling Union (UCI) days before the Tour began.

Briton Geraint Thomas retained the overall leader's yellow jersey.

With the Pyrenees looming, Thomas had his last calm ride wearing the yellow jersey at the Tour de France on Sunday.

A fascinating and increasingly tense Tour de France will begin its final push for home on Tuesday with Chris Froome insisting he would be prepared to sacrifice his own chances of winning a record-equalling fifth title to help Geraint Thomas win his first.

"Anything can happen. Three big days in the Pyrenees to come plus a hard time trial".

Dumoulin is up to third, one minute 44 seconds behind Thomas, with 2014 victor Vincenzo Nibali of Bahrain Merida fourth, two minutes 14 seconds down.

Jasper Stuyven of Belgium finished third, also six seconds back, and three-time world champion Peter Sagan came fourth.

The Netherlands' Tom Dumoulin remains third at 1:50, while Slovenia's Primož Roglič is fourth at 2:38.

Speaking on Monday's second rest day, Team Sky boss Sir Dave Brailsford said spitting and booing seems to be "a French cultural thing".

So far, Thomas and Froome have not attacked each other, but that uneasy truce could be put to the test as the race enters its decisive phase.

"For me this is the highlight of my career, it's a massive honour and priviledge to be wearing the jersey and have such an incredible race so far", he said.

"I always kept a little back so I was able to respond if they attack", said the 25-year-old Cort Nielsen, who gave Astana back-to-back wins the day after teammate Omar Fraile claimed Stage 14.

He was wrong, with Team Sky initially opting to hold their position, filling the roads as they narrowed to block counter-attacks and quickly smothering an attempted jab from Romain Bardet, before eventually upping the pace and sucking Martin back in - a compliment if not a material gain in minutes and seconds for the Irishman. He tried a getaway while going up the Pic de Nore climb at 40 kilometers from the finish but was reeled in on the way down.

Following those victories, Thomas - whose previous highest Tour finish is 15th - said "everything else is a bonus".
