Wimbledon glance: Djokovic eyes 4th title against Anderson

Kate and Meghan to have girls day out at Wimbledon to cheer Serena Williams

U.S. player Serena Williams reacts against Germany's Angelique Kerber during their women's singles final match on the twelfth day of the 2018 Wimbledon Championships at The All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon, southwest London, on July 14, 2018.

Angelique Kerber became the first German woman to win Wimbledon for 22 years on Saturday but insisted the seeds of her shock triumph over Serena Williams were sown during a miserable 2017 season.

Williams was aiming to match Margaret Court's record of 24 grand slam singles titles after a remarkable run just 10 months on from the birth of her first child.

"To all the mums out there, I was playing for you today, and I tried but Angelique played really well, she played out of her mind", Williams, playing only her fourth tournament since returning to the Tour, said.

Less than a year after giving birth, Serena Williams captivated the world this month as she soared to the Wimbledon final.

In the first Wimbledon final for 41 years to feature two women 30 or older, Serena was cheered on by her friend the Duchess of Sussex, golf legend Tiger Woods and Formula One ace Lewis Hamilton.

Saturday's victory was Kerber's third title at the Slams - all coming after her 28th birthday. I saw her at the beginning of the tournament where I don't think she played well. As she said, she's going to play many more years.

The final started more than two hours late, because they had to wait for the end of Novak Djokovic's five-set victory over Rafael Nadal in a men's semifinal that was suspended the night before. I did the best that I could every match that I played.

Strong, fit and determined, Kerber wasn't rattled by Williams' powerful groundstrokes.

"It was such an fantastic tournament for me". Writing about the experience for CNN, Williams said she was grateful to have access to a great medical team, but noted statistics that "black women in the United States are over three times more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth-related diseases". As Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton cheered her on from the stands, the tennis star remained gracious as ever, acknowledging the outstanding performance of her opponent, Angelique Kerber. That she came back after all this up and downs, after having a baby now, playing tennis like she's playing now, that's great.

"You know, I didn't know a couple of months ago where I was, where I would be, how I would do, how I would be able to come back".

Williams has not lost a Wimbledon final for 10 years, last defeated by someone who knows her better than most - her sister Venus. She wore special compression leggings as a precaution during Wimbledon, just the fourth tournament of her comeback. September 1 and had skipped last year's Wimbledon.

The powerful American had been on a 20-match winning roll at Wimbledon, a sequence that started in 2015, and had picked up speed round by round in the past fortnight.
