West Oxfordshire MP resigns from government over Brexit plan

Government defeated an amendment from Tory backbench MPs which would have kept UK in a customs union with the EU if it fails to agree a free trade deal

Prime Minister Theresa May has bowed to pressure from Brexit supporters in her Conservative Party, accepting their changes to a customs bill that underpins Britain's departure from the European Union, write Elizabeth Piper and William James.

The prime minister survived a backbenchers' rebellion demanding a customs union deal with the EU - but lost a separate vote demanding free flow of medicines across Europe post-Brexit.

May's vulnerability in parliament, where she lost her Conservative Party's majority in an ill-judged election previous year, was laid bare on Monday, when her decision to accept demands of pro-Brexit lawmakers stirred a rebellion among those who want to keep the closest possible ties in the EU.

The amendment would have required the government to try to negotiate a customs union arrangement with the EU if, by January 21, 2019, it had failed to negotiate a frictionless free trade deal with the bloc.

A 10th member of her government quit on Monday in order to vote against her - this time in favour of a soft Brexit - and Mrs May needed the backing of three rebels from the opposition Labour Party to win.

Another pro-EU lawmaker Dominic Grieve, who has led previous efforts to get the government to soften its Brexit stance, said the party needed to accept compromises "or accept that Brexit can not be implemented and think again about what we are doing".

A junior British defense minister resigned Tuesday after Prime Minister Theresa May conceded to adding hard-line Brexit amendments into a customs bill.

If the amendment had passed it would have thrown May’s Brexit strategy into disarray and increased pressure on the beleaguered leader to step down

Of course the white paper was released prior to the amendments to UK Brexit legislation that will dictate its approach to trade and customs negotiations, therefore the white paper that Barnier struck a relatively constructive tone on has changed, and most likely changed for the worse in Barnier's view.

On Friday, she will give a speech in Belfast about the government's Brexit White Paper and how it addresses the Irish border issue.

In response to that, Mr Jones urged the other 27 European Union member states to "show an element of flexibility to avoid the catastrophic "no deal" scenario".

She was slated to face more votes yesterday, including one on a proposal to send lawmakers on holiday early in what is seen as a tactic to avoid more plotting against her.

"She should do the right thing and trigger a by-election where she can, if she wishes, take her chances against a real Labour candidate". The government was defeated by four votes, 305-301, then won the more important customs vote 307-301.

If a Brexit deal is blocked in Parliament, May's options would be limited, since she does not want Britain to leave the European Union without a deal, with all of the economic damage that would entail.

Sterling slid to 10-month lows against the dollar on Wednesday after data showed British inflation failed to rise as expected, a day after Brexit-linked political turmoil had sent the currency hurtling lower. The big question is will Boris Johnson take the opportunity to make a statement about his resignation as foreign secretary?
