Israel strikes Gaza militant sites, Palestinians fire rockets

Palestinian teenager killed in Gaza border protests

Israel's Education Minister and leader of coalition party, Naftali Bennett, slammed a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas which was announced on Saturday night to end nearly twenty-four hours of fighting, calling it a "serious mistake".

Even as the airstrikes were being carried out, the IDF said rockets were fired toward Israel.

Israel said it has "delivered the strongest blow against Hamas" since 2014 with dozens of air strikes, after Gaza militant groups fired more than 100 rockets across the border. There were no immediate reports of any casualties. Two Palestinian teenagers were killed in an airstrike in Gaza City, while four Israelis were wounded from a rocket that landed on a residential home. A 20-year-old struck by gunfire Friday during the protests in the southern Gaza Strip had also died of his wounds. the ministry said, while a further 220 Palestinians were wounded in protests along the frontier.

Gaza militants often vacate potential target sites during flare-ups and Israelis who live in villages and towns near the border have reinforced rooms in their homes and rocket sirens that alert of an incoming attack.

An Israeli military spokesman declined to comment, but said its actions would depend on what happens on the ground.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a harsh warning to Hamas earlier on Saturday before the ceasefire was announced after meeting with Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman and the IDF chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot.

The surge in violence followed mounting public criticism of Netanyahu over failure to counter a new Palestinian tactic: incendiary kites and balloons launched from Gaza that have burned crops and scrubland in southern Israel.

In a statement, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said they had launched strikes against multiple militant sites in Gaza in response to renewed violence along the border.

Meanwhile, Hamas fired at least 60 rockets and mortars at Israel throughout the day.

Hamas said it fired the rockets to deter Israel from further action.

"We are not in a (military) operation".

"Our message to Hamas is that we can and will enhance the intensity of our effort if needed", he said.

Netanyahu said it was made a decision to take "powerful action against Hamas terror". A police spokesman said no hits had been recorded in the city.

Palestinians in Gaza have for months been demonstrating against Israel's decade-long blockade of the territory and in support of their right to return to lands they fled or were driven from during the war surrounding the creation of Israel in 1948.

The Israel Air Force did bomb a number of Hamas and Islamic Jihad installations, but it's the kind of damage from which the terror groups quickly recover.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum told Reuters: "Efforts by many parties have continued since the beginning of the escalation and the Israeli bombardment on Gaza". Most recently, it has been struggling to cope with the widespread fires caused by the incendiary kites and balloons floating over the border.
