Malaysia arrests former PM Najib Razak, charges expected

Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak was arrested Tuesday and will be charged amid an investigation into the disappearance of billions of dollars from a state investment fund he founded, a Malaysian task force said.

He is expected to be charged in court on Wednesday. Local media reports said Najib was seen leaving his house in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, in an unmarked police vehicle.

Last week during a two-day official visit to Indonesia, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad told a special session at the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta that Najib would be arrested "soon".

Since his ouster, Najib has been barred from leaving Malaysia and questioned by the government's anti-graft agency along with his wife, Rosmah Mansor.

Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad says that authorities have an "almost flawless case" against Najib and his allies.

Najib has been investigated over suspicions that he may have siphoned off monies linked to a state investment fund called 1MDB.

The US Department of Justice has alleged in lawsuits that more than $4.5bn (£3.4bn) from 1MDB was laundered through a complex web of transactions and shell companies, of which $681m ended in Najib's bank account.

The scandal around 1MDB plagued Najib's second term in office, eventually leading to the ousting of a coalition that had ruled Malaysia since its independence from Britain in 1957.

A 1MDB taskforce set up by the government this week said 408 bank accounts involving funds of almost 1.1 billion ringgit had been frozen. Mr Najib denies wrongdoing. Red Granite in March agreed to pay the USA government $60 million to settle claims that it benefited from the 1MDB scandal.

"I call on the owners of these accounts to come to MACC and we will show them the evidence and documentation that these funds came from 1MDB, then we will ask them to give back the funds willingly".

The seizure, dubbed the biggest in Malaysian history, was conducted under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 as part of the 1MDB investigation.

Malaysian police say they have seized almost $275 million worth of jewelery, handbags, watches and cash from premises linked to Najib, while authorities have frozen more than 400 bank accounts as part of the 1MDB probe. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Razak is accused of using his 1MDB sovereign wealth fund as a "personal piggy bank" to pump money into the development of Red Granite Pictures, among other, more Wolf of Wall Street-y things.
