Governor Holcomb directs flags to be flown at half-staff

Candles representing the slain journalists of Capital Gazette sit on display during a candlelight vigil held near the Capital Gazette the day after a gunman killed five people inside the newspaper’s building in Annapolis Md

President Donald Trump has ordered US flags on federal property be flown at half-staff through sunset Tuesday to honor five newspaper journalists slain in Maryland's capital.

The White House issued a presidential proclamation early Tuesday by Trump ordering the lowering of the flags over the Annapolis attack - four days after Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, issued an order for flags flown at state institutions.

The White House said the initial request was denied because it did not come directly from the Mayor.

The gunman who attacked the newspaper-Jarrod Ramos-is facing five counts of first-degree murder.

Ramos is charged with murdering five Capital Gazette staff.

Shortly after the order was released Tuesday, Buckley told the Sun that the reversal was "the least respect we could give the journalists".

Since no flag should fly higher than the USA flag, all other flags, including state, municipal, corporate, or otherwise, should also be lowered during this same duration of time, Malloy said.

Just one day after the mass shooting, Trump's reelection campaign sent out a press release attacking "the fake news media", The Pluralist news site reported. At a moving memorial for all the victims, fellow journalists likewise urged supporters to continue working to "find our better angels", and asserted a vital truth: "We are not the enemy - we are you". "I even told my wife, 'We have to be concerned". "This was an attack on the press".

Last week's shooting has been dubbed one of the deadliest attacks on journalists in USA history, with five employees being killed in the Maryland newsroom. "It's just as important as any other tragedy". Friday morning's edition featured in-depth coverage of the shooting and obituaries of the five people killed.

"She was very sympathetic", Buckley said in an interview.

In deciding to lower the flags, the White House in a proclamation said the nation shared in the sorrows of those affected by the shooting. They are Rob Hiaasen, 59, editor and columnist; Wendi Winters, 65, a community news reporter; Gerald Fischman, 61, editorial page editor; John McNamara, 56, an editor and sports writer; and Rebecca Smith, 34, a sales assistant.

Marquardt said he contacted the police "to pursue one particular comment in which he wished I would be dead, and the police looked into it".
