Apple And Samsung Finally Settle Long-Running iPhone Patent Infringement Battle

Now for some real fun the S6 versus the iPhone 6 Plus!Ron Amadeo

On Wednesday, according to court documents filed, the two smartphone manufacturing giants made a decision to settle the case.

In a separate, previous publicized settlement over patents with HTC, Apple also didn't disclose settlement terms.

Apple and Samsung resolved their seven year long dispute terminating the most noted case in succession of lawsuits over smartphone patents spanning over nearly a decade.

"We can not provide any details other than that we reached an agreement with Apple", a source from Samsung Electronics said.

Apple and Samsung have been embroiled in a legal battle for over seven years, as the iPhone maker sought compensation for patent infringement. In August 2012, Apple won the initial jury verdict and was awarded $1.05 billion, but Koh ordered a retrial after deciding the jury added an extra $399 million for violation of additional trademarks that weren't included in the trial.

Apple originally pursued to obstruct Samsung phones from the market, but the technology at debate has for a long time obsolete, and the battle since then has predominantly about money.

In 2015, Samsung Electronics compensated Apple with $548 million, with design infringement accounting for $390 million of the amount.

That award was seen as a victory for Apple, which had argued in court that design was essential to the iPhone.

An Apple statement in May said the company believes "deeply in the value of design, and our teams work tirelessly to create innovative products that delight our customers".

"We're grateful to the jury for their service and pleased they agree that Samsung should pay for copying our products", it added.

The South Korean tech giant earlier claimed it "will consider all options to obtain an outcome that does not hinder creativity and fair competition for all companies and consumers" concerning last month's ruling.

"This settlement marks the official end of the 'smartphone patent wars, '" said Brian Love, an assistant professor at the Santa Clara University School of Law.
