Serbia appeal to Federation Internationale de Football Association over ref decisions

StoriesWorld Cup day nine the things you might have missed

Three Switzerland stars have escaped World Cup 2018 match bans but been hit with Federation Internationale de Football Association fines for their goal celebrations in Friday's 2-1 win over Serbia.

The trio crossed their hands to make the sign of the double-headed eagle on the Albanian flag in Switzerland's 2-1 win.

"The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Swiss players Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri for their goal celebration during the match Switzerland vs. Serbia", they said in a statement on Saturday.

Granit Xhaka of Switzerland celebrates after scoring his team's first goal during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia group E match between Serbia and Switzerland at Kaliningrad Stadium on June 22, 2018, in Kaliningrad, Russia.

Xhaka and Shaqiri are both ethnic Albanians from Kosovo, which broke away from Serbia in war in 1999 and declared independence nearly a decade later but is not recognised by Serbia.

Xhaka was born in Switzerland, but his ethnic-Albanian parents came from the Serbian city of Kursumlija, where his father was jailed by Yugoslavian authorities in the 1980s for participating in anticommunist demonstrations as a student in the Kosovar capital, Pristina.

When asked about his celebration Shaqiri said, 'It's just emotion. Shaqiri also posted photos of his playing boots with a Kosovo flag on one heel and the Swiss flag on the other heel.

Krstajic told Serbian journalists that German referee Felix Brych should be tried for war crimes in The Hague for failing to award his team a penalty. "And I think the main thing is that we were not able to finish our opportunities".

Xhaka, Shaqiri and Lichtsteiner would likely have been shown a yellow card at the time for their celebrations.

FIFA, world soccer's ruling body, and its European counterpart UEFA ensure that Serbia and Kosovo are kept apart when making draws for European competitions.

"We have always displayed pride as a defence mechanism, not really as something to poke into somebody's eye", said Ely Lokku, an ethnic Albanian originally from Macedonia who now lives in Toronto.

When Switzerland boss Vladimir Petkovic was questioned about the gestures, he said: "I can only repeat what I already said yesterday - you should never mix politics and football".

The goal celebrations also didn't go down well in Serbia.
