Qualcomm's Snapdragon 1000 has Intel's PC market in its sights

Qualcomm Snapdragon 1000 rumored to be specifically built for PCs

According to a report facilitated by WinFuture, the line-up of "Always-Connected PCs" are all set for a launch in the later part of this year with modifications to accommodate the recently unveiled Snapdragon 850 chipset.

Qualcomm is expected to continue their push into the PC market with the Snapdragon 1000. This alleged chipset is said to be created to function on more powerful Windows notebooks and 2-in-1 devices.

Part of this push of the envelope has to do with rumors that there will be a first-ever socketed variant of the Snapdragon processor, meaning that it does not have to be placed directly on the motherboard. This goes up directly against the Intel Y and U series of mobile CPUs, which both draw 4.5 watts and 15 watts respectively.

Designed from the ground up as a desktop and laptop processor, the Snapdragon 1000 is an evolution of Qualcomm's strategy to take Intel's ground in low-power computing devices. 16GB of RAM, two 128GB of UFS storage modules, gigabit LTE and 802.11 ad WiFi support makes the 1000 platform seems like a pretty great mobile powerhouse.

According to the job posting, it is clearly evident that Qualcomm is working on Snapdragon 850 and Snapdragon 100- more powerful variants of Snapdragon 835. The SD 1000 chipset appears to be having 6.5W power drawing to its own CPU and an overall output of 12W for the whole SoC. The package size is reportedly 20 x 15mm, while an Intel processor belonging to the company's "U" series features a package size of 45 x 24mm. The upcoming Snapdragon 1000 will use the all fresh ARM's Cortex A76 architecture based cores. In other words, the Snapdragon 1000 is approaching Intel's latest two-in-one chips for power consumption.
