Battling Petra Kvitova hits peak form to retain her Birmingham Classic crown

Petra Kvitova is yet to drop a set in this years Nature Valley Classic beating three top 30 players on her way to the semifinals

Petra Kvitova's stellar 2018 season continued in Birmingham on Sunday as the No. 4-seeded Czech overcame Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to defend her title at the Nature Valley Classic tournament. Today, Kvitova routed fellow lefty Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-3, 6-2 to win her ninth straight match at the tournament.

The victory is Kvitova's fifth WTA title of 2018 and gives her the flawless preparation for Wimbledon, which starts on 2 July.

"Petra, when she's on fire, you can go shake her hand and say, "Okay, I just want to leave from here".

"Amazing statistics this week", Kvitova said.

She said, after the match: I knew it was going to be hard because Barbora is such a huge fighter and returning quite well. "I really managed to focus and play well", Buzarnescu said after the match.

Earlier in the day, 2009 victor Magdalena Rybarikova and two-time runner-up Barbora Strycova set up an intriguing semi-final clash after the pair collected convincing victories.

"I think it will be fun for both of us", Kvitova said. She's in good form as we see.

She will face defending champion Petra Kvitova in the final - and much like with Strycova, she has a long-standing friendship with Kvitova.

It was further proof of a remarkable recovery for the Slovak from a ranking of 453 early last year, which has been followed by a Wimbledon semifinal and a chance of regaining a title she won nine years ago. "So it'll be fun to watch and fun to play, hopefully". "She's such a tricky player and she's amazingly talented". I mean, the first match, that was incredible match for me, to beat Karolina [Pliskova]. "When I broke her serve, it was a little bit kind of better for me". I will try my best.

A double fault from Rybarikova led to another break and her continual errors ensured the match was swiftly levelled.

In the Mallorca final, No. seed Anastasija Sevastova, a victor over Sam Stosur, will take on Tatjana Maria who ousted American teen Sofia Kenin in three sets.
