Three things we learned from England win against Tunisia

England fans clash with Tunisians in Marseille

England's World Cup 2018 voyage has begun, and Gareth Southgate's young Lions got off to the best possible start, as Harry Kane's injury-time victor against Tunisia gave them their first victory in their first match at a major tournament since 2006.

Harry Kane's double saw England begin their World Cup campaign with a victory, with the captain heading the winning goal in injury time.

Kane and England made the ideal start to the tournament as he tapped home from close range to score after just 11 minutes.

England lost pace and conceded in the 35th minute when Ferjanni Sassi bagged the equaliser for Tunisia, ensuring that the two sides went level at halftime.

But England were unable to replicate their exciting attacking play from the first half after the break, with Southgate's men managing a solitary shot on target before their captain popped up with an injury-time victor - his second goal from three shots on target. It's fair to say that, unlike the majority of his England teammates, the softly-spoken Maguire hasn't played in the really big games, domestically or in Europe. It was from Maguire's headed pass that the other Harry - Kane that is - nodded in for England's victor in stoppage time.

Kieran Trippier swung in the corner from the right flank, Harry Maguire flicked it on and Kane, unmarked at the back post, guided the ball into the net for his second goal of the game and the victor. Maybe you run out of time, but we kept doing the right things and making good decisions.

"I thought they were pretty ordinary", Dunphy said on RTE Sport.

Kane added: "I'm really proud of the players". "It is true they had Beckham, Owen, and other players but I do not think they had the osmosis they have now", Maaloul told reporters on Sunday ahead of the Group G match.

"They got there in the end". They have got a hard enough game as it is without putting any more confusion in it. "Obviously when you look at the penalty they got..."

"We had a lot of bug spray on before the game, half-time, which was important because there was some of them in your eyes, some of them in your mouth. It shows good character to get on with it, and it's a massive win", Kane enthused after the game, as quoted by the Guardian. That could be seen as either rugged common sense from Gareth Southgate against one of the World Cup's poorer sides, or needless gambling with the team's hopes in Russian Federation.
