US President Donald Trump digs in heels on disturbing immigration policy

Donald Trump says he will not let US become 'migrant camp'

"The United States will not be a migrant camp and it will not be a refugee holding facility", he said during an event on space policy.

Almost 2,000 children were taken from their parents over a six-week period in April and May after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a "zero tolerance" policy when it comes to prosecuting those arrested for illegally entering the country.

Almost 2,000 children have been separated from their families over a six-week period in April and May. "The only thing missing is a conductor".

The threat to Republicans in swing districts was enough to push Representative Steve Stivers, who chairs the National Republican Congressional Committee, to break with Trump. "We can not and will not encourage people to bring children by giving them blanket immunity from our laws", he said.

Typically, parents are sent to court, while children go to government facilities as the Trump administration carries out the new "zero tolerance" policy.

Trump also falsely blamed Democrats for creating "crippling loopholes" that have resulted laws that force family separations at the border.

Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL), a leading pro-immigration Republican, told TPM that House members were "still massaging" the legislative language to end family separation.

"In the name of the Mexican government and people, I want to express our most categorical and energetic condemnation of this cruel and inhuman policy", Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray said at a news conference.

Trump was headed later Tuesday to Congress to huddle with Republican lawmakers, many of whom are deeply uncomfortable with the separation policy. The border separations are of course immoral and unconscionable. The president and his allies also have been increasingly accusing Democrats, while decrying the child separations, of not showing adequate outrage over killings and crime by undocumented immigrants.

DHS has rejected claims that it has a blanket policy to separate families at the border, stating Monday that it will separate adults and minors under certain circumstances, including: when it's unable to determine the familial relationship, when it determines a child may be at risk with the parent or legal guardian or when a parent or legal guardian is referred for criminal prosecution.

Health experts have said children can suffer lifelong physical and psychological challenges when they are forcibly separated from a parent.

Governors across the United States are now queuing up to say that they will not support the separations, with New York, Colorado and MA saying they will not provide troops to help secure the border - and Maryland recalling its soldiers.

To prosecute illegal migrants in the U.S. "I'm committed to finding a solution that preserves the respect for the rule of law and secures our borders while being compassionate to these young children". Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Attorney General Jeff Sessions have defended the administration's policies saying they are merely enforcing the law.

And he declared the USA needs to be secured, whether or not that seems politically palatable. The separations have been blasted by Democrats, some Republicans, medical professionals and rights activists.

An NBC-Wall Street Journal poll shows that support for Trump's immigration policies would make around half of voters oppose a candidate. That includes six in 10 men and seven in 10 women.

Meanwhile, Mr Trump's job approval rating averaged 45%, according to Gallup polling conducted last week.
