Southgate's selection dilemmas heading into World Cup

Rodney Wallace is looking forward to his first World Cup with Costa Rica

It took Marcus Rashford just seven minutes to show he was in the mood on Thursday night, the Manchester United forward beating Costa Rica defender Kendall Waston with a piece of skill that Ronaldinho would have been proud of.

It may have been a walk in the park for England, but it was a vibrant performance full of energy as Southgate's men overran their Central American opponents. We finished the season and it was straight into the Euros and I think we suffered because of that.

"There are a lot players in there who can make an impact in any given moment".

Mourinho has previously insisted Rashford won't be leaving, be it on loan or permanently, but perhaps he should reconsider that stance to further his development.

At the back too, players are forcing Southgate to think again about his starting line-up.The wing-backs in particular were excellent against Costa Rica, with Danny Rose and debutant Trent Alexander-Arnold showing that they've got the defensive nous and attacking flair to make an impact in Russian Federation.

With Gareth Southgate at the helm - a manager who has matured into a serious global head coach - there is a real belief among the current top players, coupled with a growing maturity and desire to do well.

The precocious 20-year-old started just 17 Premier League matches for Manchester United last season.

"If we got to the quarters, I think that would be a really good achievement", he added.

"He had a hard end to the season having to play on his own as a number nine at times".

"Henderson can play as a number eight, so that gives you an option, Dier can play as a centre-back...so they both have another way into the team".

"I think we've managed to split the camps up pretty well, and I've got to say the support team I have got around me is top, really top in every department".

"We've got the ability to do it". Southgate said. "My job is to allow people to dream. That's what Harry Kane does and what, unfortunately, Sterling doesn't do".

The Three Lions played a high-energy game and kept possession well, two things their opponents failed to do.

The dismissal of Costa Rica with substitute Danny Welbeck adding the second goal meant the hosts extended their unbeaten run to 10 games, going back almost a year. It wasn't the first team versus Nigeria (2-1 win) and a second team tonight.

The Rashford we saw for England on Thursday nearly looked like a completely different player to the unconfident, stressed Rashford we saw in Man United's FA Cup Final defeat to Chelsea. No, I will. I'll take the dogs for a run.

"She is great and my family will always come first but we have got a big tournament to prepare for. This year, I feel in better condition and that's good", Rashford told ESPN.
