France condemns 'fits of anger' after Donald Trump’s G7 turnaround

Donald Trump before leaving for the G7 summit

"We are focused on everything we accomplished here at the summit".

"We have put up with Trade Abuse for many decades - and that is long enough".

He blamed past world leaders, including past presidents, for that situation, but said the current crew - including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - now know that the "gig is up".

Both Moscow and Mr Trump have denied the allegations. "We make commitments and keep them", the presidency said, adding that "France and Europe maintain their support for this statement".

French President Emmanuel Macron, for example, noted that under European Union rules France now has open borders with Britain and Germany and runs trade deficits with both - far from Trump's vision of "reciprocal" balanced trade.

"We have to have deals that are fair", Trump said.

Germany also said it would abide by the communique.

In an "extraordinary" exchange between the leaders on Friday (local time), Mr Trump repeated a list of grievances about United States trade - mainly with the European Union and Canada, a French presidency official said.

But even this was overshadowed by Canadian host Prime Minister Justin Trudeau vowing to impose retaliatory tariffs on USA goods after Trump's "insulting" decision to invoke national security to justify a levy on aluminum and steel.

"And so began a long litany of recriminations, somewhat bitter reports that the United States was treated unfairly, that the trading system was totally unfavourable to the United States, the American economy, American workers, the middle class", the official said. "It was a hard time, rough, very frank".

Macron told reporters that while Trump may not mind USA isolation, "neither do we mind signing a six country agreement if need be".

This most recent awkward and intense handshake - which left Trump with that notable white thumbprint - took place during the annual G7 summit.

It was not immediately clear where the new round of aggression would leave the two leaders and their mercurial attempts to find trade peace. At one point, German Chancellor Angela Merkel was seen having a brief, intense one-sided conversation with a stony-faced Trump on Friday.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addresses a press conference at the conclusion of the G7 summit in La Malbaie, Quebec, June 9, 2018.

But the G-7 is intentionally small - a cozy group of relatively wealthy and democratic nations that discuss hot-button political and social issues such as climate change and trade.

"The nature of the debate we had was rather appeasement and it stopped the escalation in terms of behavior", Macron, who had exchanged terse Twitter messages with Trump in the run-up to the summit, told reporters.

He arrived at La Malbaie, the scenic luxury resort on the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Quebec, as the four European leaders and the two EU heads were huddled together in a room to coordinate their strategy.

May pleaded with fellow leaders to step back from the brink of a damaging trade war at a session of the summit on Friday night.

Trudeau said he told Trump directly that Canadians "particularly did not take lightly the fact that it's based on a national security reason" and held firm to the government's threat of retaliation. "If you give in now, he will come back tomorrow for more".

An EU official was quoted by Reuters as responding to Trump's tweets by saying that "we stick to the communique as agreed by all participants".

The early exit also means he will be gone before allies begin closing news conferences likely to be laden with criticism of the USA stance on trade and Trump's abrupt suggestion on Friday that Russian Federation be re-admitted to the elite grouping.
