Applause and a standing ovation greeted Beavercreek’s new police chief, John Turner, following swearing in ceremonies during the October 9 meeting of the Beavercreek City Council.

Beavercreek named Captain John Turner to serve as the new Beavercreek Chief of Police on October 3, 2006 following City Council’s decision to fire chief Arthur Scott on September 23. Turner is a 30 year veteran with the police department and has a long list of experience and training in law enforcement.

Following the swearing in ceremony, Chief Turner addressed council and the crowd with a few personal remarks:

“As you know Beavercreek has been my home for my entire life and I have worked for the Beavercreek Police Department for 30 years. I’ve watched Beavercreek grow and change in many ways. When I first started as a police officer, we had no shopping malls or interstate highways. Beavercreek was mostly residential with two-lane roads, Dunnigan’s hardware was considered one of our anchor stores for the community (and) on a good night, the police department would have only two officers and a sergeant patrolling over 50 square miles which was then known as Beavercreek Township.

I’ve had the pleasure to work with four different police chiefs and under their leadership developed as a person and a law enforcement officer. I’ve experienced the highs and the lows of this job, from apprehending bank robbers in the act to delivering death notices to family members. I love being a police officer and I’ve never wanted to do anything else.

I’m fortunate to be a part of an organization comprised of professional management staff and well-trained officers… I have every confidence in my officers that we will be ready to face any new challenges that may come up in the years ahead. Together we will continue to provide the best service possible to the citizens of this community, and I thank you for your support.”
